Google launches free website service for Indian SMEs
In its latest bid to get masses online Google India has launched ‘India Get Your Business Online’ programme under which it is offering free websites to the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) in the country. Under the scheme Google is also offering free Internet domain, e-mail and a host of other services to the Indian SMEs.To avail this service you need to log in to www.indiagetonline.in, which features a range of web hosting tools powered by HostGator. The offering also includes a custom free .in domain, and also Google is providing training on managing and setting-up of websites.Interested small business owners would need to submit their PAN (permanent account number) and other tax-related details for verification, after which they would be provided with an online tool for a free Website and Web hosting service for one year.However,from the second year onwards, the user companies would have to pay a nominal fee, depending on the type of service package they opt for.
Google has partnered with Hostgator, the hosting giant HostGator will provide free support in site hosting and management for one year.The programme is also supported by Federation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), FISME.Google is already running similar programmes across other countries like the U.S., the U.K., Australia and Italy.

According to Google Senior Vice-President and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora, “India is home to an estimated 80-lakh SMBs, but only about four lakh have an online presence…we want to change this. We are trying to make sure that there is a large ecosystem. Users coming online seek information and we are looking at helping people find utility in being online.”
